Alexis Hloros’ story is one of resilience, determination, and love. As a single father to his daughter, Izzy, Alexis came to COTS during one of the most challenging times of his life. Heartbroken, alone, and with little support, he struggled to find stability while caring for his daughter. But everything began to change when he was referred to COTS. With the support of his coach, Ms. Thomas, Alexis was able to set goals that helped him find housing and regain a sense of hope for his and Izzy’s future.
“COTS gave me a sense of direction when I felt completely lost,” Alexis says. “I was heartbroken and overwhelmed, but day by day, that began to change for me. I took advantage of the resources and began working with my coach to evaluate my circumstances and create a plan. The best part was realizing I wasn’t alone on my journey.”
A former professional boxer known by the nickname “Hurricane,” Alexis used to pour all of his energy into the ring, driven by the desire to become a world champion. That same drive fuels his passion for fatherhood and his new goal of becoming a police officer for the City of Detroit. His mindset hasn’t changed—it’s still about being a champion, but now it’s about being a champion for his daughter and his community.
“My focus has shifted,” he shares. “I used to train with the mentality of a champion in the ring. Now, I train my mind and heart to be the best father I can be for Izzy.”
Alexis is also involved in COTS’ Fatherhood Initiative, a program that he says has provided him with invaluable parenting tools. He regularly participates in DadScussions, where he connects with other fathers and learns new approaches to fatherhood. “I love hearing the experiences of other dads,” Alexis says. It helps me grow, and I get to share my journey, too. We’re all learning together.”
One of Alexis’ most memorable experiences has been his involvement in COTS’ Fatherhood Photobank project, which captures the special moments between fathers and their children. For Alexis, this project was an opportunity to reflect on his role as a father and cherish the bond he shares with Izzy. “Being part of the Fatherhood Photobank project meant so much to me. Those pictures of Izzy and me—they capture the love and joy I feel every day being her dad.”
Alexis’ story is a testament to the power of hope, community, and transformation. Through COTS, he has not only found a home but also the strength to build a brighter future for himself and Izzy. His journey continues, and he is determined to give back to the community that has supported him.
